The Dyson V12 cordless vacuum is $150 off for Black Friday, and it’s worth the upgrade.

We currently recommend the entry-level Dyson V8 series, as well as the top-tier Dyson V15 series, which have consistently outperformed every other cordless stick vacuum we’ve tried.

However, the new Dyson V12 Detect Slim, released earlier this year, offers many of the features we love about the V15 for around $150 less. After spending about eight hours testing the V12 on a mix of carpets, tiles, vinyl floors, and hardwood floors, liberally covered in cat and rabbit fur, cat litter, and rabbit poop, we concluded that the V12 Detect Slim is worth considering. as an alternative to the V15, especially if you can find it for $500 or less.

Dyson V12 Detect Slim

This new cordless vacuum has many of the same smart features as the more expensive V15, like a laser headlight, particle counter and auto-adjusting suction. And it is more comfortable to use.

We’ll be running more tests and sharing our full impressions of the V12 and other new cordless stick vacuums soon. In the meantime, here’s everything we love about the V12 Detect Slim and everything we don’t.

Dyson finally ditched the trigger

We’ve long complained about the discomfort of Dyson’s trigger switches, which you have to squeeze when vacuuming – it’s particularly annoying if you have a sore hand or wrist. The V12 trades this uncomfortable feature for a simple on/off button. You are now free to switch hands while navigating around table legs and litter boxes! This is a huge advantage over the V8 and V15 series.

It’s light and nimble

At 5.2 pounds, the V12 is thinner and slightly lighter than the V8, our current runner-up, and significantly lighter than the V15 Detect, which weighs 6.8 pounds. Like the engine of the V15, the V12 is positioned vertically above the stick (as opposed to perpendicular to it, as on the V8). This design helps the V12 feel more balanced and easier to maneuver.

A laser and a screen that show the debris

Do you need a laser on your vacuum cleaner? Probably not, but as we note in our guide, in typical Dyson fashion, the laser is part gimmick and part real innovation. The V12’s green laser headlight, which lights your way and helps reveal dirt and debris, is a little less powerful than the much more expensive V15’s. But we found it’s still bright enough to reveal dust in hard-to-see areas.

Although the laser had trouble detecting dirt on patterned vinyl floors, it proved useful in dimly lit areas such as under tables, on dark hardwood floors, and on tiles in between. sink and bathtub. You might be surprised, and slightly disgusted, by the amount of dust and hair it illuminates, not to mention the hidden stains you wish you didn’t see.

Like the V15, the V12 has an LCD display with a particle counter, which estimates the size and type of particles the vacuum has picked up. It will tell you, based on particle size, if you live in a home infested with pollen, dander, dust mites or fleas. (My house? All of the above!) But all kidding aside, is there anything you can actually do with this information? Not really, other than wallowing in the grossness of the world. The only handy feature on the LCD screen is the runtime countdown, so you can race against the clock to get your little corner of the world cleaner.
