Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is the traditional kickoff to the holiday shopping season, with many retailers offering deep discounts.
Cyber Monday, the Monday following Thanksgiving weekend, emerged as an online alternative to Black Friday, which typically drew large crowds to physical stores.
Over time, however, retailers mixed Black Friday and Cyber Monday, offering deals both in-store and online, and started rolling out discounts earlier. This year, Black Friday sales started as early as October.
“We have Black Friday, but it’s really spanned almost months,” said Timothy D. Malefyt, a clinical professor at Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business.

The differences between Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals aren’t dramatic, though some tech products may be the exception, Malefyt said.
For many items, if you see a bargain now, don’t wait to buy, Malefyt said. But it may be worth the wait if you’re shopping for electronics.
Many shoppers are waiting until Cyber Monday to get products in part for fear of missing out on deals altogether, Hatch said.
“Some online retailers may have their biggest online product discounts on Black Friday, then more discounts over the weekend until Cyber Monday, but somehow call back the discount” , Hatch said, noting that the move could trigger concern among consumers. .
Consumers spent $10.7 billion on Cyber Monday last year, with toys, video games and electronics among the top-selling categories, according to Adobe Analytics.

Cyber Monday is typically associated with tech deals, and electronics still gets deeper discounts on virtual retail holidays, Hatch said.
“You can probably shop with pretty high confidence on Cyber Monday online feeling like you’re getting a really good deal,” Hatch said.
Many retailers, however, are sticking to the tradition of offering door-to-door TV deals on Black Friday.

Major retailers Walmart, Target and Amazon are already offering early Black Friday deals on electronics, home goods, apparel, toys and more.
JCPenney, Belk and Macy’s offer some of the biggest promotions announced on Black Friday, with an average discount of at least 53%, according to personal finance site WalletHub.
Consumer Reports recommends consumers start shopping early, shop online rather than in stores, use websites and apps to track prices, and stick to a budget.
According to the National Retail Federation, about 166.3 million people plan to shop from Thanksgiving Day to Cyber Monday this year, and 114.9 million consumers are expected to shop during Black Friday.
